Web Content Specialist
Carthage College seeks a Web Content Specialist to join our award-winning communications and marketing team.
This position will offer you the challenge for creating, updating, and maintaining the content on the College's website, as well as for ensuring that content is optimized for search engines.
This person will become the key point of contact between the Office of Communications and the technical teams responsible for the website's functionality.
The ideal candidate will know how to write for a variety of audiences, and edit to ensure accuracy and flawless presentation.
This person will approach all assignments with keen attention to detail, a collaborative spirit, and a great eye for design.
While this is primarily a content position, web development and design skills are a definite plus.
Knowledge and experience in SEO, mobile site optimization, and working with content management systems is required.
Experience in HTML and CSS is preferred.
The College's website is essential to recruiting new students, communicating important information to current Carthaginians, and connecting alumni across the world.
By ensuring web content is accurate, engaging, and easy for visitors to find and navigate, the Web Content Specialist will play a key role in raising the visibility of the College, increasing engagement among target audiences, and advancing priorities according to the College's strategic plan.
The Web Content Specialist reports to the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications.
Main Responsibilities: Curate submissions, and maximize/maintain existing content: Copyedit and proofread all web content.
Ensure content on the website is fresh, expertly edited, accurate, accessible, well organized, and easy to find.
Look for ways to improve existing content with supporting elements such as video and images.
Collect, manage, and complete all requests for website updates.
Assist in the creation of new landing pages and websites, paying close attention to thoughtful planning, content, and site architecture.
Create new content: Generate content for the College's website, newsletters, and other online communications that is consistent with the Carthage brand, voice, and marketing objectives.
Research and write profiles, articles, and "listicles" about students, faculty, academic programs, special events, and notable alumni for the website, newsletters, and alumni magazine.
Collaborate with other departments: Work closely with the College's editorial team to repurpose content that appears in other College publications, and promote the site's assets through appropriate social and traditional media channels.
Work closely with the College's academic departments and administrative offices to assure the consistency and quality of web content.
Coach faculty and staff toward creating quality copy for their websites.
Help them recognize good ideas, and then find the ideal outlets for those stories.
Work closely with the site's technical team to maintain site standards, functionality, and responsive and mobile site optimization.
Become the campus expert in the College's content management system.
Train others in its use.
Work closely with the CMS team to facilitate improvements.
Analyze and improve: Use Google Analytics to monitor and analyze site traffic, measure effectiveness, and uncover insights.
Compile reports on digital activities that include suggestions for improvements.
Ensure website content is optimized for search engines.
Proactively monitor website to find, diagnose, and fix website problems including formatting inconsistencies, broken links, typos, accessibility issues, and display issues (particularly for mobile sites).
Maintain site search and smart search results.
Work with the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications to establish and coordinate a yearly maintenance schedule for all web pages.
Innovate: Keep current with emerging web technologies.
Be the primary advocate for the College website by identifying and pitching new technologies and opportunities.
Assist the Office of Communications in evaluating online trends.
Always seek ways to make the site more appealing to visitors.
Be ready to dream up fun projects, brainstorm wild ideas, and imagine absurd possibilities with the full Communications team as we tackle the wide variety of projects that come our way.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, digital marketing, English, or related field.
Two or more years' experience writing, editing, and curating copy for websites and other digital media.
Two or more years' experience with HTML, CSS, web analytics, and content management systems.
Knowledge and understanding of best SEO practices, and experience creating optimized web content.
Experience creating accessible content for web and online documents including PDF and Word documents.
Experience with responsive design and mobile device optimization.
Experience in higher education or not-for-profits a plus.
Preference will be given to professionals with experience in accessible website design and content development.
Necessary Skills / Qualities: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Highly organized.
