Job Description The Director, Global Alliances is the champion for programs governed by alliance agreements between AbbVie and our external partners with a focus on jointly advancing drug discovery, development, and commercialization of medicines that bring remarkable impact to patients.
The Director will lead all alliance-related activities in support of AbbVie’s partnered pipeline assets.
This entails responsibility for driving internal and external alignment on the overarching drug development strategy by leading the interactions with external partners while acting as a strategic business advisor to AbbVie teams and leadership.
The Director is responsible for driving alignment on the overarching strategy and developing a risk mitigation plan in collaboration with the alliance partner to best position the partnership for success.
The Director will be responsible for establishing and maintaining the necessary processes, methods of communication, training, and governance required to explore, execute, and maintain successful partnerships.
The Director is responsible for leading strategic business reviews of partnered assets at contractually defined decision points and making recommendations to senior leadership.
The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for supporting due diligence and business development activities when assessing and negotiating potential future partnerships.
As necessary, the Director negotiates and completes business amendments and restructures existing alliances to bolster the future success of the partnership.
This individual will work within a cross-matrix team setting composed of both internal and external partners and will drive the relevant agendas for all governance meetings.
Major Responsibilities: Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.
Act as advocate for the alliance, resolving conflicts and facilitating relationships between the part ners, leveraging alliance management best practices.
Participate in developing an aligned overarching development strategy for the programs and ensure that risk mitigation plans are proactively managed.
Interface directly with the project teams, steering committees, and company leadership and be accountable for facilitating the development strategy for the alliance assets to drive them forward.
As required per agreement and business need, lead risk-appropriate diligence, coordinate team alignment, and make strategic recommendations on partnered assets to senior leaders.
Drive the agendas and execute governance meetings between internal and external partners.
Support AbbVie’s business development strategy and operations as appropriate.
Support and reinforce AbbVie Partnering Culture through advisement and mentoring of AbbVie team members.
Support AbbVie’s corporate partnership events to build and strengthen external relationships with existing and future partners.
Keep VP of Globa l Alliances and Corporate Business and Strategy Office leadership aware of developments and maintain buy-in throughout the partnership process while ensuring that coordination and communication occurs at all stages of the partnership process.
Establish and promote best partnering practices to gain competitive advantage and establish AbbVie as partner-of-choice.
Significant Work Activities -Continuous sitting for prolonged periods (more than 2 consecutive hours in an 8 hour day) Qualifications Qualifications: Advanced scientific degree (PhD, MD, or PhD-MD) with a focus on Immunology, Oncology, Neuroscience, or Eye Care strongly preferred.
5-10 years of experience in pharmaceutical development or commercialization required.
Proven interpersonal and negotiation skills to develop and maintain successful and healthy partnerships.
Experience working with external partners.
Ability to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate and negotiate with individuals and groups internally and externally.
Willingness to be accountable for all aspects of each alliance partnership.
Requires thorough understanding of the research, development, and commercialization of new drugs through past experiences and a good grounding in scientific, development, regulatory and commercial concepts in both early and late-stage development programs.
Must demonstrate critical thinking for conflict resolution; risk management; organizational alignment; and strategic proposals.
Experience working in a cross-matrix project team is essential, and late stage clinical and commercial development experience is preferred.
Strong communication skills.
Experience with various business development deal models, including option-based models.
Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously and managing competing priorities.
Familiarity with legal and contractual governance.
Familiarity with financial models.
